This is a service provided by IWK to empty sludge from your septic tank before it exceeds the maximum level. The maximum volume of sludge that a septic tank can store is approximately one third of its total volume. Desludging is a mandatory service and is regulated and monitored by the Department of Sewerage Services, Ministry of Energy, Water & Communications. The frequency of desludging is dependent on the capacity and design of the septic tank. Septic tanks design according to Malaysian Standards (MS 1228) need to be desludged regularly.

Customer is reminded not to pay IWK staff or representative when the scheduled desludging service is being rendered to the premise septic tank.

The Sewerage Services Act 1993 (SSA 93) imposes an obligation on the owner or occupier of any premises having a private sewerage system or septic tank to operate and maintain such sewerage system or septic tank. A contravention of the said Act will result in an offence being committed. Section 25 of The Sewerage Services Act 1993 (SSA 93) stipulates:

A)

ensure adequate access to the septic tank for the purpose of enabling the septic tank to be serviced and desludged;

B)

cause the septic tank, the private connection pipe and all accessories thereto to be so maintained and kept as not to be a nuisance or harmful to health; and

C)

cause the septic tank to be cleared, cleansed and emptied by a licensed sewerage services contractor.
